CRANBURY, N.J.–In support of Lung Cancer Awareness Month, CURE Connections® unveiled a discussion series featuring American Lung Association’s National Director of Lung Cancer Education Carly Ornstein, MPH, former NFL linebacker, founder of The Chris Draft Family Foundation and co-founder of Team Draft Chris Draft, and stage IV lung cancer patient Nancé Neshanian to share their experience with lung cancer. The series was done in conjunction with the expert lung cancer team from the Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center including Leora Horn, MD, MSc, associate professor of medicine, assistant director of the educator development program and clinical director of the thoracic oncology program. CURE Connections® is a video platform designed specifically for patients with cancer featuring information, stories, and advice about the cancer journey.
In the series, Ornstein brought attention to the ongoing stigma faced by lung cancer patients saying, “We need to change the face of lung cancer. Many lung cancer patients, because of the stigma, don’t feel comfortable speaking up and sharing their story.” And she encouraged those affected by lung cancer to share their stories and connect with others at LUNGFORCE.org, the American Lung Association’s initiative to unite lung cancer survivors and their loved ones across the country.
Draft shared his changed perception of lung cancer after his wife Keasha Draft was diagnosed. “She was 37 years old when she was diagnosed, and she passed away a year later, when she was 38. She was in amazing shape. We found out that anyone can get it, right? Well, if anyone can get it, then it’s not good enough to just say that prevention is all you can do. That means that the full cancer game plan is prevention, early detection, treatment, research, and survivorship.”
Nancé Neshanian concluded the conversation with an empowering message: “I don’t let it limit me in anyway. It may come a day that it will, but so far it hasn’t.”
